No Doubt’s leading lady has nabbed herself a hot new single and the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s most coveted and anticipated issue of the year. For the cover Miz Stefani dons a bubble gum pink creation from Raf Simons’ final collection for Jil Sander that went perfectly with the Alexis Mabille Couture headpiece that manages to take up 60% of the photo. I was however pleasantly surprised to see that within the accompanying editorial she also wears my favourite piece from the entire Jil Sander fall 2012 collection, an elegant midi length navy off the shoulder dress with fun front cut out. (For more of me gushing about the entire collection click here.)
The cover itself is a little too text heavy and I am on the fence regarding the stunning hat but Gwen being as perfect as she is sells this issue regardless. The editorial (although excessively girly and very predictable of Terry) did a good job of showcasing some stunning looks from Alexander McQueen, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, The Row and Versace.
I think overall I am just sort of disappointed. For such an important issue and such an iconic full of attitude woman this seems to just fall flat. The 42 year old mother of two looks amazing outfitted in such a demure style but I expected something more powerful and better representative of her style.
For the article Gwen opened up about her signature platinum locks and red lips, her first Prada dress, and her love for playing dress up:
On her signature red pout:
“I remember sitting in my ghetto, beat-up Honda Prelude, and putting on that lipstick in the rear-view mirror and being like, ‘Uh-huh, I like that. That’s the sh** right there.’ I never stopped after that.”
On sitting in a salon for 8 hours to achieve her signature platinum blonde hue:
“It was like I’d unlocked the key. I remember feeling like, ‘I have arrived. This is me. Finally.’”
On humble beginnings:
“I did my own makeup, my own costumes; I did everything myself. I didn’t even know there were stylists. I remember there was a point when all the guys were sitting around eating pizza, and I finally said I needed some help. So I got an assistant, but guess who he was? A roadie. He took my first Prada dress, which Gavin had bought for me, the first designer piece I ever owned, and he washed it, and it came back [indicating Barbie doll—size with her fingers] this big.”
On getting dressed up:
“I’ve always been a girl who loves to dress up. I already put my makeup on twice today: I put it on to take my kid to school, and then I went home, washed my face, and put it on again to have lunch with you. I like to make my husband like me more and he likes it when I’m wearing makeup.”
